The Attack on Scientific Freedom

A disturbing report from Science magazine:

The news that Australian climate scientists were relocated into secure offices after receiving death threats and abusive e-mails became a political issue in parliament this week.

. .. Contacted by ScienceInsider, a spokesperson for the Australian National University in Canberra said, “In response to increasing harassment, including death threats, nine staff working in the area of climate change were moved to a more secure location which requires card access.” She added, that “death threats occurred over the course of the last 3 years and were passed to the Australian Federal Police.”

It’s not just Australia.  When we invited a noted climate scientist to speak at Berkeley Law School last year, we had to arrange police security for the talk because of the death threats he had received.

What on earth has happened to our society when scientists find themselves at risk of physical harm for investigating the weather?

  1. We can agree that death threats and intimidation are inappropriate. Likewise, we should also agree that it is wrong for climate activistists to use undocumented fake deaths (premature deaths”) that are allegedely caused by global warming, to mislead and frighten the public.
