Republicans Hate Your Grandchildren, Part 2

Rick Scott Makes Sure Floridians Won’t Know About Climate Danger

Have you ever seen them together?

Have you ever seen them together?

It’s a common refrain around the web that Florida’s Republican Governor Rick Scott looks a lot like Lex Luthor, the arch-villain of Superman comics. The term fits, both aesthetically and substantively: in his previous career as CEO of Columbia/HCA, he oversaw what was at the time the largest Medicare fraud in history. But as the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting, Scott isn’t content to rest on his laurels:

The state of Florida is the region most susceptible to the effects of global warming in this country, according to scientists. Sea-level rise alone threatens 30 percent of the state’s beaches over the next 85 years.

But you would not know that by talking to officials at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the state agency on the front lines of studying and planning for these changes.

DEP officials have been ordered not to use the term “climate change” or “global warming” in any official communications, emails, or reports, according to former DEP employees, consultants, volunteers and records obtained by the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting.

As they say, read the whole thing. There is no question that this comes from the top. “This unwritten policy went into effect after Gov. Rick Scott took office in 2011 and appointed Herschel Vinyard Jr. as the DEP’s director, according to former DEP employees.”

So if you live in Florida, or like to visit, or just think that it would be a nice thing if the country was not inundated, Rick Scott couldn’t care less about you. And since your grandchildren will be worse off, he couldn’t care less about them, either.
