More Bad News on Climate: Boxer is in Deep Trouble

Barbara Boxer has been a US Senator for 18 years.  She is chair of the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee, and is a real environmental hero.  If we ever get a climate bill, she will have a lot to do with it.

And she is also in deep political trouble.

Take a look at this graph.

This shows Tom Campbell winning the Republican nomination pretty easily, and nothing indicates a change.  If Campbell wins the nomination, he will beat Boxer.  He’s just the sort of faux-moderate Republican that will be attractive in a bad year for Democrats.

With all the talk of Carly Fiorina, this is really the problem for environmentalists.

  1. I know both Barbara Boxer and Tom Campbell personally, and I’ve seen them both in action (Barbara Boxer and I were County Supervisors at the same time, and I was an environmental lobbyist in Sacramento at the time that Tom Campbell was in the State Legislature). I absolutely agree that environmentalists should do everything they can to reelect Barbara Boxer.

I most emphatically do NOT agree that “If Campbell wins the nomination, he will beat Boxer.”

First, if you want to motivate environmentalists to work for and contribute to Barbara’s campaign (as they should, and as they need to do), don’t tell them it’s a lost cause; that’s just not very motivating.

Second, Tom Campbell has been significantly unsuccessful as a candidate beyond the district centered on Stanford University. And Barbara is scrappy and a fighter – besides being a good environmentalist.

IF Tom Campbell wins the Republican primary, my bet’s for Boxer. My money’s on Boxer. That’s where your readers should put their money, and their bets, as well!
