Yes, It’s That Time of Year Again

If you read Legal Planet, you know how much the work we do matters. Now is the time to support it.

Like everyone else, I’m sure you find fundraising appeals annoying. That’s why we only do them two days a year on Legal Planet.  But there couldn’t be a more important time for the work we do. This has been the hottest year on record. It’s really now or never to address climate change.

That means that the environmental work we do at Berkeley and UCLA remains as urgent as ever.  We run lean operations, and every dollar of support goes a long way.

Much of our work involves the state of California. That works remains critical, even with a sympathetic presidential administration. States like California are well in advance of the rest of the country, and the work we do isn’t subject to the shifts in national elections.  We’ve already cut emissions substantially, and we’re now working on some tougher stages of decarbonization that much of the country won’t get to for years. In other words, California remains America’s testbed for climate policy, and we’re providing expert input into the state’s efforts.

The work we’ve done at UCLA and Berkeley has more than local significance. In a project headed by former Governor Jerry Brown, we are working to bring what we’ve learned in California to assist China in reducing its carbon footprint. We’re also spearheading international efforts to reduce methane emissions. And there’s also a need for reliable, evidence-based insight into the national situation.  Our research programs at Berkeley and UCLA are dedicated to those missions.

The last few years have been a time of turmoil, from political shockers to a pandemic that took us by surprise.  One constant has been the need to address the environmental crises facing the world. We have devoted ourselves to that effort in past years, and we need your help to keep doing so in the future.

And speaking of the future, our work on climate change and other environmental issues will benefit not only this generation but our children,  grandchildren, and beyond.

We promise not to hit you up again till the days grow long again next summer. In the meantime, thanks for your support, and for reading Legal Planet!
